Civil society groups and community organisations in Johannesburg marched to Gauteng Premier, Panyaza Lusufi’s office earlier today to hand over a memorandum of demands.
The Operation Ubuntu march was one of several marches taking part in the country, in reaction to the ongoing protests against undocumented migrants that started in June.
Protesters called for an end to what they call xenophobia and Afrophobia on the continent. They also raised concerns around migration and the treatment of foreign nationals.
Gauteng Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni says their part is to ensure protests and marches are peaceful across the province.
“For us is to ensure (that) we ensure that the marches have to be peaceful. Where there are people who are committing crime, we have been seen acting precisely. For an example, last week in Springs, we had unruly marchers which we acted (on), and we were in a position to arrest not less than 60.”
