Struggle veteran and the only remaining leader of the 1956 Women’s March to the Union Buildings, Sophie de Bruyn has urged young women to take advantage of the opportunities that come with democracy.
She was speaking to SABC News as South Africa marks the 70th anniversary of the historic march of more than 20 000 women against the apartheid government’s oppressive pass laws.
De Bruyn says women stand to benefit a lot from this democracy.
She says, “I am extremely happy to say – yes women are in high places today, we have a majority of women in Parliament, we have our women as captains of industry and I always say to young people, the world is your oyster just put up your hand and reach for to the sky, but today you can go beyond the sky you can become an astronaut, so there are all these opportunities that have been made possible especially for our women.”
