The Speaker of Council in the City of Johannesburg Margaret Arnolds has called on communities ravaged by gang violence to speak up.
Arnolds has conveyed a message of condolences to the family of a 53-year-old scholar transport driver who was killed in Westbury, Johannesburg, on Monday.
Gauteng police are searching for two suspects linked to the murder.
They say the driver had just dropped off schoolchildren and was preparing to park at a flat when two men approached him and opened fire.
Arnolds spoke to SABC News outside the deceased home in Westbury.
“As the City of Johannesburg, we pass our condolences, but we are very devastated to hear this. Our children, our fathers, our husbands cannot be dying like this. I mean, this person was not related to any gangs. He was an ordinary person trying to put food on the table for his family and he was killed. He was shot and shot from the back almost as if it was an assassination. I also plead with parents that know that their kids have got guns, let us come out, let it start with us. We complain, government is doing nothing, police are doing nothing, but what are we doing to curb this?”
