KZN disaster teams activated as severe thunderstorms expected

Disaster management teams have been activated in the southern parts of KwaZulu-Natal as severe thunderstorms are expected to affect that part of the province.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Level 4 Warning for severe thunderstorms along with a warning for damaging coastal winds.

The severe thunderstorms are expected to bring heavy downpours, excessive lightning and damaging winds throughout the day.

Spokesperson for the provincial department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Siboniso Mngadi, says, “Municipalities likely to be affected include Ray Nkonyeni, Umdoni, Umzumbe, uMuziwabantu, uMzumbe, uMzimkhulu, Johannes Phumani Phungula, and Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma.”

“MEC Buthelezi has urged communities to remain vigilant, as these weather conditions could cause flooding, infrastructure damage and other dangerous conditions. Our disaster management teams in the mentioned municipalities have been urged to be on alert and follow all the necessary measures,” says Mngadi.
