Al Jama-ah’s mayoral candidate for Johannesburg, Ashley Mama says the party is willing to negotiate with all political parties after the upcoming local government elections, except for the Democratic Alliance (DA).

The current coalition in Johannesburg includes the ANC, EFF, PA, AIC, IFP and Al Jama-ah.

Mama says the party will not work with the DA because of its stance on Israel and Palestine.

“We will speak to all parties except one. Al Jama-ah is diametrically opposed to Zionists. Period. We stand with the people of Palestine. We don’t receive any Israeli funds. So the only party we won’t work with is the DA. But if so all other parties we were we we’re open to completely.”

Meanwhile, the party has pledged to address water and sanitation challenges if elected in the upcoming local government elections.

Its plans include upgrading bulk sewer infrastructure, clearing blocked pipelines and introducing strict five-year preventative maintenance schedules.

The party launched its 12-point election manifesto in Orlando, Soweto, this Saturday afternoon.

It has also promised to deploy ward-based rapid repair teams to fix water leaks, reduce water losses through smart meters and upgrade neglected township and suburban roads.

Al Jama-ah President Ganief Hendricks says many communities still lack access to basic services.

“Like I said earlier on at the Hector Peterson Museum, our mothers must still take the buckets to the river and fetch the water. Our sisters must go to the forest and fetch the wood for the fire. Our learners in school must still use the bucket system, and sometimes they fall down the pit latrine and they die. So, we haven’t achieved the dignity that the 1976 uprising wanted to achieve.”
