Cabinet is intensifying preparations for the possible impact of an El Niño weather event this year and next year amid concerns over water security, agriculture and food supplies.

Government says measures are being put in place to reduce the potential impact on communities and municipal water systems, particularly in areas already experiencing water shortages.

Deputy Government Spokesperson William Baloyi explains how authorities are preparing for the potential effects. “We want the citizens to be alerted of what is to come. Very soon through the Government Communication and Information Systems (GCIS), we will publish the public campaign parts when it’s finalised. As you might be aware, El Niño is a climate phenomena, and its impact depend on how it develops and on local weather conditions. So, South Africa is preparing for the possibility of hotter and drier conditions and below normal rainfall in some areas during especially this season.”
