A civic organisation in the Free State is calling on government to strengthen support for families affected by gender-based violence and femicide.
Buang Basadi founder, Thoko Nogabe says the province is already facing a GBVF crisis and that organisations need adequate funding to assist affected families. Nogabe says government support should extend beyond psychological counselling and include regular follow-ups, basic necessities and emotional care for families who have lost loved ones to GBVF.
She says many families are left struggling after the loss of breadwinners. “When we say we will bring food parcels, let us bring those food parcels. When we say we will buy school uniforms, let us do that. We must not come only when there is a funeral or when we have heard that someone has brutally passed and then we disappear, they need support. When the perpetrators appears in court, we must support because there is nothing painful when we go to court and it is only the families.”
