he countdown to Christmas is beginning in Cardiff, with work now well underway to transform the City Hall lawn into one of the capital’s most popular festive attractions.

Although we’re only halfway through October, preparations for Cardiff’s Winter Wonderland are already taking shape, with the giant wheel almost fully assembled and construction continuing on the popular après-ski lodge.

The familiar sight of the towering wheel returning to the Civic Centre is one of the first signs that Christmas is just around the corner, with workers busy getting everything ready for the start of the festive season.

The two-storey Sur La Piste Alpine Ski Lodge is also being assembled, ready to welcome visitors looking to enjoy a festive drink, hot chocolate or mulled wine in cosy surroundings.

And it won’t be long before we’re counting down the final days to Cardiff’s big Christmas lights switch-on.

When will Cardiff’s Christmas lights be switched on?

Cardiff’s Christmas lights will officially illuminate the city centre on Thursday 12 November 2026, marking the start of the capital’s festive celebrations.

The lights will brighten up popular shopping streets including Queen Street, The Hayes and St Mary Street, alongside the city’s historic arcades and other shopping destinations.

The switch-on coincides with the opening of Cardiff’s Winter Wonderland and Christmas Market, giving residents and visitors plenty of reasons to head into the city.

The Christmas lights will remain in place until Sunday 3 January 2027.

What’s coming to Cardiff’s Winter Wonderland?

Winter Wonderland will once again operate across two locations, with attractions spread between City Hall lawn and the grounds of Cardiff Castle.

At City Hall, visitors can look forward to the return of the giant wheel, which will offer panoramic views across the capital and its Christmas lights.

This year’s wheel will feature improved lighting and more comfortable gondolas, while the surrounding family fairground will offer a selection of rides, games and attractions.

The popular Sur La Piste Alpine Ski Lodge will also return, offering a cosy setting for festive drinks and seasonal celebrations.

Meanwhile, Cardiff Castle will host the return of the undercover ice rink, outdoor Ice Walk and a smaller novice rink for those finding their feet on the ice.

New for 2026 is a Bavarian curling experience, giving groups of friends and families another activity to enjoy during their visit.

Winter Wonderland will run from Thursday 12 November 2026 until Sunday 3 January 2027.

Entry to both sites will be free, although individual attractions and activities will be charged separately. Ice skating must be booked in advance.

Cardiff’s Christmas Market will also return on Thursday 12 November, bringing festive stalls to the heart of the city centre.

Stalls will be spread across St John Street, Working Street, Hills Street and Trinity Street, offering visitors the opportunity to browse gifts and enjoy the atmosphere while exploring the capital’s shops and attractions.

Further festive entertainment will follow later in November, including the return of Christmas at Bute Park, which opens on 19 November and runs until 31 December.

With the giant wheel already nearing completion and more attractions beginning to take shape, the transformation of Cardiff into a festive destination is well underway.

There may still be a few weeks to go before the lights are switched on, but the first signs of Christmas are already appearing across the Welsh capital.
