Democratic Alliance (DA) Joburg Caucus Spokesperson Devon Steenkamp says fuel shortages at Pickitup are just one of the issues that have led to the lack of vehicles deployed from its Randburg Depot for waste collection.

According to the DA, the city is experiencing cash flow constraints. His comments come as many areas have reportedly experienced delays in their waste collection around the city.

“Through our engagements with officials and receiving tip-offs, we established that fuel shortages have significantly reduced the number of refuse collection vehicles on the road. We’ve also seen the landfill disruptions and ongoing cash flow pressures that are affecting the operations, and this all points to a wider financial problem within the city. Pickitup’s own leadership has publicly acknowledged that the city is experiencing cash flow constraints that are affecting multiple municipal entities, not just Pickitup,” Steenkamp explains.
