The Gauteng Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) Department is piloting a new water monitoring system designed to detect leaks and monitor chlorine levels across parts of the province.

The initiative, developed by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) aims to prevent water-related health crises such as those experienced in Bronkhorstspruit and Hammanskraal by strengthening oversight of municipal water supply systems.

The department says the technology will provide reliable, data-driven information to help the provincial government monitor water distribution networks and hold municipalities accountable for water-related challenges.

Gauteng CoGTA MEC Jacob Mamabolo says, “This pilot is going to help us to track and trace water to see the entire integrated water distribution network across the province. We will be able to track water levels and flow of the water. With this system we are able to monitor if levels fall below a certain point.”
