The National Police Ministry and South African Police Service (SAPS) leadership in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) have turned to the courts in a bid to halt further protests by anti-immigration movement, March and March.

Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia and KZN Provincial SAPS Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, have filed an urgent application in the High Court in Durban.

The legal action comes in the wake of heightened tension across the province.

Tensions flared following violent anti-immigration demonstrations and clashes in the Durban central business district and surrounding areas, which led to property damage, road blockades and heightened public safety concerns.

While state officials maintain that citizens hold a constitutional right to express grievances, the Police Ministry says unlawful blockades, intimidation and violence will not be tolerated.

The matter is set to be heard this Friday.
