Prestwick Park Expansion Approved Near Newcastle International Airport

Planning permission has been granted for the expansion of Prestwick Park business centre, near Newcastle International Airport, supporting further investment and jobs-led growth.

The first phase of expansion consists of a single office building of approximately 680 square metres which could accommodate up to 80 employees. Further expansion within the 2.5-hectare employment allocation in the Northumberland Local Plan, adopted in 2022, will follow.

The Wilson family, who own and manage the estate, brought forward the approved application with support from Rural Solutions, a multidisciplinary rural planning, architecture and landscape practice. Early demand for the new office space is already strong, from both new and current occupiers at the business park.

Prestwick Park was established in 2005, when former agricultural buildings were converted into high-quality offices. Reclaimed Northumbrian stone from the original farm buildings was reused on site, while slates for the feature roofs came from La Sagesse School in Newcastle.

Today, Prestwick Park is home to a thriving community of small and medium-sized businesses and has been fully occupied for some time. The approved building will provide additional space for businesses to establish and grow, supporting new jobs. Close to Newcastle International Airport, the Metro, Ponteland and Prestwick village, it offers strong public transport links and nearby services.

The new building has been designed as a contemporary addition to Prestwick Park, responding to the character and material palette of the existing business park through the use of local stone and metal roofing. Its sustainable design approach also includes provision for on-site renewable energy.

The Design and Access Statement prepared by Rural Solutions for the approved scheme states:

The elevations incorporate glazing which is paired with timber louvres to provide the necessary solar shading whilst creating facades that make the most of the views and offering light-filled spaces.

The Wilson family said:

We are delighted to have secured permission for this new office building. Prestwick Park has been home to a successful business community for more than 20 years, and this investment will help us respond to demand for more high-quality workspace while supporting new jobs and the park’s continued growth.

James Ellis, Planning Director at Rural Solutions, added:

This consent is an important milestone for Prestwick Park and reflects the strength of this location for sustainable, jobs-led growth. It will deliver additional high-quality workspace close to the airport and Metro, while responding carefully to the character of the existing park. It also supports the estate’s continued contribution to the local area.
