African National Congress (ANC) President Cyril Ramaphosa says rebuilding public confidence in law enforcement requires aggressively rooting out corruption and criminal infiltration within the South African Police Service (SAPS). Speaking on the broader issues of high crime rates in Cape Town, he has emphasised that the deployment of soldiers in crime rigged communities was never meant to replace the police but to support them.

He has been answering media questions on the sidelines of the ANC campaign trail in the Western Cape.
“The soldiers support, they act in a supportive role and we do believe that supportive role has been bolstering their opportunity or the work of the police. Crime of course not only here in CTN but in other areas is a major problem that we are dealing with and we are addressing that from rooting out wayward police officials. We are ensuring that those police who are committed should continue serving the people of our country with distinction and with full commitment to serving the interest of our people.”
