Neath Port Talbot’s tourism team has launched six self-guided itineraries to help visitors plan short breaks in the area, which is promoted as the Dramatic Heart of Wales.
The itineraries bring together places to visit, activities, accommodation and food and drink stops into pre-planned routes. They cover road cycling, mountain biking, family adventures, dog-friendly trips, girls’ getaways and haunted history.
The Road Cycling itinerary is a two-day route that begins at Aberavon Seafront before heading into the Afan Valley and towards Waterfall Country. The Mountain Biking itinerary focuses on Afan Forest Park and highlights places where riders can hire equipment, get repairs and refuel. The Family Adventure itinerary includes the regenerated Gnoll Country Park, Margam Country Park and Aberavon Beach over a suggested two-day break.
The Dog-Friendly itinerary is aimed at visitors who want to bring their pets, following increased interest in pet-friendly trips in 2026. Another itinerary combines outdoor activities with relaxation for groups of friends, and the final itinerary is aimed at visitors seeking ‘dark tourism’ and haunting experiences.
Councillor Cen Phillips, Cabinet Member for Culture, Tourism and Wellbeing, said: “We’ve seen increasing interest in visits to the Dramatic Heart of Wales in recent years. What makes our area special is the variety of experiences you can enjoy in just a couple of days.”
He added: “The new itineraries make it easier for visitors to plan a break around the things they enjoy, whether that’s mountain biking, travelling with your four-legged friend, spending time with the family, planning a girl’s getaway or uncovering some of the area’s more unusual stories. Each itinerary has its own character, but together they really show the contrasts that make this part of Wales so interesting, and all within easy reach from convenient transport links.”
The itineraries are available through the Dramatic Heart of Wales website. The project is supported by the Welsh Government through the UK Local Growth Fund in Wales.
