The University of Fort Hare (UFH) in the Eastern Cape has honoured retired Constitutional Court Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga with an honorary Doctor of Laws, Honoris Causa.
The honorary degree recognises Madlanga’s outstanding contribution to constitutionalism, human rights and the law, both in South Africa and internationally.
The honour comes just weeks after UFH launched an international moot court competition bearing his name, bringing him back to an institution long intertwined with his journey.
This is retired Madlanga’s third honorary doctorate from the country’s universities.
The university believes that Madlanga’s contribution to its Faculty of Law as a guest professor in 2018 played a pivotal role in shaping the institution’s legal output.
Madlanga says he does not take this recognition lightly.
He says, “Honorary degrees are not gifts…they are a way of honouring the recipient for tangible days that they have done and the benefits, the benefit that they have been to society in general. I’m not saying that is how I see myself, but that is how Fort Hare has seen me, that is how Walter Sisulu University, that is how Rhodes university also saw me.”
