Some residents of Soweto have praised the Electoral Commission for the smooth running of the elections.

Now, they are pinning their hopes on the new administration in the City of Johannesburg to bring change, deliver services and improve their living conditions.

Soweto has historically been considered an ANC stronghold. But with over 80 political parties and independent candidates that contested the municipal elections in Johannesburg, this might change as political parties like the DA, ActionSA and independents encroach and eat into the ANC-held wards.

With over 54% of the votes declared in Joburg, the DA continue to maintain a leading position at almost 40%, followed by the ANC with 17% and ActionSA in third position at 15%.

Soweto resident Sibusiso Mazibuko, says, “We did not experience any issues on election day. We woke up and went straight to the polls. Our situation is bad here. We have been protesting. We hope that the new local government administration will bring positive changes to our lives. We are not working here. The state of this hostel is horrible.”
