A man has been charged with murder after a woman was found dead in the bathroom of an apartment in Sydney's west.

Police said they arrested a man on Monday after finding his wife's body in a bathtub filled with acid on Sunday, with tubs of the chemical uncovered in the same room.

The 19-year-old woman had been living in the unit on Pennant Hills Road in North Parramatta with her husband and their pet cat, who was rescued from the scene.

Police wore full HAZMAT suits and breathing apparatuses to enter the property on Monday.

Officers were initially called by a member of the husband's family concerned for the welfare of the woman.

Neighbours reported hearing screaming in the hours before detectives broke down the door.

NSW Police had made an appeal for the woman's husband, aged 20, to come forward. He later handed himself into Bankstown Police Station where he was arrested.

Superintendent Julie Boon said the exact cause of the woman's death was still unknown but confirmed the presence of chemicals at the scene.

A post-mortem examination is expected on Tuesday.

NSW Police said late on Monday night that they had charged a 20-year-old man with murder.

He was refused bail and is set to face Bankstown Local Court on Tuesday.

Strike Force Jenola has been formed to investigate the woman's death, which is being treated as suspicious, and comprises detectives attached to Parramatta PAC, assisted by the State Crime Command's Homicide Squad.

A truck has been found in Greenacre and has been seized for forensic examination, NSW Police said.
