Colombo, March 8 (Xinhua): Sri Lankan citizens on Monday mourned the death of the famous Indian tusker “Nadungamuwa Raja,” which died in its sixties. The animal, towering 10.5 feet in height, was a celebrated pachyderm and the tallest tamed tusker in the country.

NewsIn.Asia adds that the tusker had been carrying the casket bearing the relic of Lord Buddha during the Kandy festival called Perehera every year for many years. It is therefore worshipped as a sacred animal. The President of Sri Lanka, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, has ordered that the body of the tusker be preserved for posterity to see.
