The death of fast-rising Nigerian gospel singer Osinachi Nwachukwu set social media ablaze on Saturday, April 9, 2022, as controversies and outrage spread over the cause of her death. Many fans claimed she was a victim of domestic violence for a long time and chose to stay in the abusive marriage.
Osinachi reportedly died on Friday, April 8, 2022, but Netng could not immediately confirm claims by some fans that she died of cancer and was on life support for five days before her death.Osinachi’s shot at fame came around 2017 following her deep Igbo vocals on the hit song ‘Ekwueme’ by Prospa Ochimana.
When news of her death broke on Friday night, Netng sent messages to Ochimana and another gospel singer Edwin Alex, who claimed he had been in talks with Osinachi’s husband, Peter Nwachukwu, for a music collaboration before her death. Ochimana and Alex are yet to respond.
As news of her death spread on Saturday morning with fans paying tributes, disturbing allegations followed almost immediately in Twitter threads, Facebook and Instagram posts and comments. Friends, members of her church in Abuja, and music artistes, said they do not believe Osinachi died of cancer as they criticise her husband – Peter Nwachukwu, alleging that he had been abusing her for a long time.
The allegations gained more credence after gospel music star Frank Edwards shared a post suggesting that the late singer was in an abusive relationship.
“So that unreasonable human being finally put off a shining light. I won’t say much now,” Edwards wrote in the now-deleted Instagram post.
Shortly after deleting the post, he also went live on his Instagram page to provide more insights about his claims, alleging that the late singer’s husband was exerting too much control over her and her music career.
“The control was too much. When someone wanted me to get her for an event, she wanted me to tell the husband that it was free because the husband would take the money from her. I told her the control was too much,” he said. “She hid to call people and couldn’t tell people what she was going through.”
In the live video, which has also been deleted, Edwards claimed to have “heard a lot of people told her to leave [the marriage]”.
Edwards is also yet to respond to a message sent to him by Netng.
Some fans also claimed the Police had arrested the husband over Osinachi’s death, but the PRO of the FCT Police Command, Josephine Adeh, told Netng in a phone conversation on Saturday morning that she was not aware of the arrest.
“I can’t confirm that information because I don’t have it. Nobody has briefed me about it,” she told Netng. “If it happened last night, there’s no way I can get the information this morning. When I get the information, I’ll get back to you.”
Adeh didn’t pick up her calls when Netng called back on Saturday evening to confirm if she had the details.
Peter Nwachukwu did not pick calls and is yet to respond to Netng’s message.
Before her shot at national fame, Osinachi and her twin sister Amarachi, were vocalists in an acapella group – the Glorious Singers in Enugu state. After moving to Abuja, she joined Dunamis Voices International, the choir group of Dunamis International Gospel Center, led by Pastor Paul Eneche, who made news headlines in 2018 after dedicating a 100,000-seater auditorium adjudged the largest church auditorium in Nigeria.
The Dunamis church is yet to respond to Netng’s request for comment via email, calls, text messages, and WhatsApp messages sent to the church’s official email address and phone numbers. The church is also yet to release an official statement on Osinachi who was a prominent vocalist in the choir.
Before releasing her single – ‘The Cry’ in November 2020, she was featured in ‘Nara Ekele’ by Paul Enenche and ‘You No dey use me play’ by Ema Onyx.
A native of Isiochi in Abia state, Osinachi is survived by her husband and four children.
As controversy rages over the cause of Osinachi’s death, a familiar debate about how women keep secret abusive relationships and remain with their abusive partners dominated conversations on the internet on Saturday.
