Four dead in horror Queensland highway crash

Four people have died in a horror crash involving a semi-trailer and a car on a Queensland highway near the New South Wales border.

The vehicles collided on the New England Highway near The Summit, in the Southern Downs region, about 5.30pm on Wednesday.

Four people in the car died at the scene of the crash, at the intersection of Granite Belt Drive just north of Stanthorpe.

The truck driver was taken to Toowoomba Base Hospital in a state of shock.

Police were working to identify the victims, who 9News understands possibly include children.

They called on anyone with dash cam footage of the crash or the moments leading up to come forward.

Police earlier warned of extensive delays, with northbound traffic diverted through Granite Belt Drive, and urged motorists to avoid the area.
