14th May, Colombo: The late Parliamentarian Amarakeerthi Athukorala died as a result of assault injuries, according to the results of a post-mortem study.
After opening fire on the public in Nittambuwa during the disturbance that erupted in Sri Lanka on Monday, the MP sought safety in a building. After the public encircled the building, it was later claimed that he committed suicide with his own handgun.
However, The Judicial Medical Officer (JMO) at the Wathupitiwala Hospital found that he died as a result of attack injuries.
According to the report, the late Parliamentarian was assaulted and suffered numerous critical injuries.
“The MP’s death was due to multiple injuries, fractures, and internal bleeding, but he had no gunshot wounds,” the Lankadeepa newspaper said, quoting the autopsy report.
The MP’s security staffer, who was accompanying him at the time of the incident, died of a gunshot wound, according to the post-mortem report, with a bullet recovered in his body. The security officer was also badly beaten, resulting in severe injuries and a brain hemorrhage.
The Wathupitiwala Hospital’s JMO ruled that neither the MP nor his security officer committed suicide, but rather died as a result of serious attack injuries.
Police have been instructed to investigate and determine who fired the gun.
