Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Tuesday that U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s confidence vote win was “great news” and added, “I am glad we have not lost a very important ally.”

Zelenskyy called Johnson a “true friend of Ukraine” and Britain a “great ally” in the war against Russia, during an online conference hosted by the Financial Times. The British prime minister narrowly survived a confidence ballot Monday evening among his Tory MPs, by 211 votes to 148.

Speaking through a translator at the event, Zelenskyy also said: “Boris is supporting us. Boris is very concrete in supporting Ukraine.”

“I do not know who was responsible for this decision yesterday but I’m glad we have not lost a very important ally. This is great news. That is all I can say,” he added.

Zelenskyy added that full Ukrainian sovereignty over its territory was Kyiv’s ultimate goal in the battle with Russia, and stalemate in the conflict was “not an option for us.”

The British prime minister visited Zelenskyy in Kyiv in April, and the U.K. has been active in providing military support to Ukrainian forces.

Johnson was challenged by his backbench MPs Monday after mounting outrage over multiple COVID lockdown-breaking parties by government staff. The confidence vote victory will allow him to limp on as leader for now, despite 41 percent of his party colleagues now wanting him gone as prime minister.
