The Nadesaligam family were guests of honour at Biloela's Flourish Festival this year.

"When I first get into detention, I didn't expect to receive this love and support from my community – I had no idea," Priya said through a translator.

"So, when I saw that today, I was so grateful and I was so thankful."

The event was a celebration of the little town's broad diversity.

"All the different nationalities get in their costumes and cook all their food- some great tukka, I can tell you that," Biloela's mayor said.

The day filled with a taste of the world, culture shared and even traditional dances on show.

As the grateful family enjoy the festivities, Nades went around the event, individually thanking members of the community for their support.

"Me and Nades wish to dedicate ourself to the community and we are very grateful to our community," Priya said.

And while they begin to slip back into normal life, a battle for permanent residency still looms.

But it's hoped that will be finalised in the coming weeks.
