Boris Johnson has finally said he’ll resign as prime minister and leader of the Conservative party but is very keen to hang on in a ‘caretaker’ fashion until a successor is anointed.
Lots of people – in fact, nearly everyone – think this is a terrible idea, including former PM John Mayor.
People have been speculating exactly why – possibly because he doesn’t want to be in Number 10 for fewer days than Theresa May, for instance.
And the Mirror’s Pippa Crerar may have identified another reason.
EXCL: Boris Johnson and wife Carrie are planning big wedding bash at Chequers within weeks – with sources saying it’s part of reason he wants to stay as caretaker. https://t.co/oUSLeGs4Ed

Why of course!
Tory source: “It beggars belief that even after all the criticism Johnson has faced regarding integrity and probity, one of the reasons he is staying is to have his wedding party at Chequers. The Johnsons should do the decent thing and find a different venue.”

PM’s allies deny wedding party is factor in desire to stay on as caretaker Tory leader. Spox: “The PM has a strong sense of duty and will continue to serve his country until a new leader is in place solely to continue his obligation to the public”.

I mean, beyond the utter shamelessness of it, just how awkward do they want the guests to feel? https://t.co/5pJCWiyjSo

Well that figures. The world divides neatly in Johnson's world, into himself, who gets whatever he wants, the rest of the world, who are supposed to help him achieve this, and those trying to stop him for piffling reasons like the law, common decency, etc. https://t.co/ZVqB93UjF9

"I need to be Prime Minister because I want the country house for my wedding reception for this, mother of one or more of my children–the number of which I will not tell you," is an exciting twist and again, we in the US thank you for your service, the UK. https://t.co/EYqqwnFbv5

Look, it would cost a lot to reschedule a summer party at this short notice, ok? Totally reasonable to hold the country to ransom for this. I mean, you’d never get the new invites printed up in time for a start! https://t.co/Q2SxOG1A0k

Unbelievable. Not unbelievable.
But sources confirming it's part of reason he wants to stay as caretaker?????
That is utterly absurd https://t.co/11VlTZZeyp— Jon Sopel (@jonsopel) July 7, 2022
