Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is safe after a car crashed into his motorcade in Kyiv, his spokesman Serhii Nykyforov said on social media early Thursday morning.
Zelenskyy was returning to the capital after a surprise visit to Izyum, a key city recaptured during Ukraine’s recent counteroffensive. Nykyforov said he hasn’t suffered any “serious injuries.”
“A car collided with the president’s car and its escort vehicles in Kyiv,” Zelenskyy’s spokesman said. “The president was examined by a doctor, no serious damage was detected.” Medics who were accompanying Zelenskyy provided the driver of the car with emergency aid, before transferring him to an ambulance.
Nykyforov did not say when the crash took place.
“All the circumstances of the accident will be investigated by law enforcement,” Nykyforov concluded, without speculating on a motive behind the crash.
Zelenskyy released his daily video address shortly after Nykyforov’s message, but did not mention the incident.
