The European Commission pushed back against claims only a handful of people attended a virtual party it put on last month.

Devex correspondent Vince Chadwick in November tweeted that only five people showed up to a party in the metaverse, put on by the European Commission’s foreign aid department in a bid to get young people excited about the EU. Chadwick said he was eventually the only party guest left, after “initial bemused chats with the roughly five other humans who showed up.”

The EU’s executive disputed that claim Friday, telling Devex that around 300 visitors attended the event, which featured avatars dancing to house music. The Commission said it had confirmed the numbers with the site’s developers Journee.

The Commission’s foreign aid department spent €387,000 to develop a metaverse platform to promote its Global Gateway initiative, Devex reported. It’s part of plans by the Commission to fork out €300 billion by 2027 to build new infrastructure in developing countries.
