Family, friends and colleagues assembled in their numbers to bid gospel music singer Sammie Okposo farewell at his Nights of Tributes held Tuesday, December 13, 2022, at La Madison Place, Oniru, Lagos.
The award-winning artiste had reportedly slumped and died on November 25, 2022, after undergoing treatment for exhaustion.
In a glittering career, Sammie kickstarted his entertainment career as a movie soundtrack producer before venturing into music production fully. With the release of his debut album Unconditional Love in the year 2000, he took the gospel music scene by storm as the song ‘Welu Welu’ gained widespread popularity and dominated the airwaves.
Hosted by media personality Tee-A, attendees included actors, comedians and gospel singers such as Segun Arinze, Vector, Ali Baba, Chinedu Ikedieze, Charles Inojie, Tope Alabi, Timi Dakolo, Akpororo, Mike Abdul and Efe Nathan.
Segun Arinze, who spoke at length about the “The King of African Gospel”, said, “there was never a boring moment with Sammie.”
“I’ve seen Sammie rise like a Phoenix from the ashes time and time again and stand tall. I’m sure he’s up there looking down and saying you’re doing all this for me? Of course, Sammie, we are doing this for you,” said Segun Arinze.
Reverend father Ekpenyong Okon Bassey, who had come in contact with Sammie Okposo through music as far back as 1991, recounted how promising he was and the delightful ‘musical’ moments they shared.
“Sammie can be likened to a full-grown eagle that came down to perch in a small nest of birds when he joined us. We were already flying, but Sammie exceeded me”, he said.
The crowd became overwhelmed with nostalgia as Rev Martins Ogbeibo, a friend of Sammie for “over 34 years”, sang the late artiste’s largely successful pidgin English gospel song ‘Welu Welu’.
Other sensational music performers also did their bit to send the music man off in grand style. Among them were Tope Alabi, Alula Okposo – Sammie’s daughter – and gospel all-stars including Moses Bliss, Eben, Timi Dakolo, Akpororo and many more.
As the evening turned into night, a highlight reel of Sammie Okposo spending time with his family rolled by on the screen, much to the gloom of friends and family, especially his wife, Ozioma Okposo.
The night ended with a performance reel of Sammie Okposo himself — the man who now sings with angels.
Sammie Okposo’s Service of Songs will hold at House on the Rock Cathedral, Lekki, Lagos, on Wednesday, December 14, his internment holds on Thursday while his Outing Service will hold on Sunday, December 18, 2022, at The Logic Church, Lekki, Lagos.
