A Victorian sanctuary owner has desperately pleaded for the return of a stolen baby camel, with fears the mother could die from "heartbreak".

The almost six-week-old camel was allegedly taken from Ardmona's For the Love of Camels sanctuary earlier this week.

Owner Brian Fankhauser has said the baby's mother, Manuka, is "absolutely devastated".

He told 3AW radio camels are known to die from "heartbreak" when their babies are taken from them at an early age.

"Camels are very emotional creatures and are very connected," he said.

He said Manuka was "very upset" since her baby went missing.

"She cries a lot," he said.

Fankhauser said the baby was the youngest of 26 camels at the farm and that he believed the alleged theft had been targeted.

He said he was not sure how the theft had occurred, seeing as camels were such protective animals.

He has pleaded for everyone to keep a lookout for a baby camel and for whoever has taken the camel to return it, saying no questions would be asked.

Extra cameras have been installed at the sanctuary since the baby was discovered missing.
