A home invasion victim was almost run over by his own car in his Adelaide driveway after thieves sped off behind the wheel.

Wayne Henry was woken by his daughter at their College Park home in the middle of the night to find three thieves who had broken into his home and taken the keys to his Land Rover.

"I could see the second guy getting into the car and I thought 'oh this isn't good'. And they just like, that guy had it in gear, he had it started in gear," Henry told 9News.

Henry said the thieves accelerated at him in his own driveway at almost 40km/h.

"He just flattened it," Henry said.

A last-second dive to the right is all that saved him from being hit.

"It wasn't the most graceful jump, they won't pick me for a stunt movie or anything any time soon," he said.

The incident soon became a high-speed police chase through the northern and western suburbs.

The SUV was found dumped at the end of a driveway at Renown Park.

Police patrols swarmed the area but the suspects managed to elude them.

Not only did the thieves run off with the car, the suspects also took a laptop bag and a small amount of cash.

One of the suspects is described as being about 180cm tall and wearing dark clothing, police said.

"The one that I saw was the one running, he had a hoody on so he was probably about my size, they were young you could just tell by the body shape and stuff," Henry added.

The Land Rover is being forensically tested as police continue the hunt for the three suspects.
