Nigerian Chef Hilda ‘Baci’ Bassey has set a new world record for the longest cooking marathon by an individual.
At 8 am on Monday, May 15, 2023, Hilda who is cooking for 96 hours (four days), broke the record set by Indian Chef Lata Tondon who cooked for 87 hours, 45 minutes 00 second in September 2019.
Hilda started cooking on Thursday, May 11 and is expected to hit her 96th-hour target by 4 pm on Monday, May 15, 2023.

Hilda Bassey, 27, from Akwa Ibom state, is a Sociology graduate from Madonna University, Anambra state.
According to information on her official website, she’s a foodpreneur, actress, and TV presenter known for her exceptional homemade recipes.
She is the founder of ‘My Food by Hilda’, a premium restaurant and delivery service for African and continental dishes.
Hilda’s passion for cooking was inspired by the culinary techniques of her mother.
She started gaining national prominence on TV with ‘In my Kitchen’, the cooking segment of Rave TV’s breakfast show, Morning Rave. She also hosts ‘Dine on A Budget’ on Pop Central TV where she engaged celebrities on topical issues and treated them to a good dining experience.
Since launching her first premium fast-food restaurant in June 2022, Hilda has also featured in movies and soap operas, including Dream Chaser, which was nominated for Best Movie at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA).
During the Covid-19 pandemic, she provided over 3,000 meals to less privileged communities for social impact and has also trained over 2,500 students in the culinary arts.
“Taking on the challenge of breaking the Guinness Book of Records for the longest cooking marathon is no easy task. However, Hilda Baci is determined to step up to the plate,” her team said. “Her cooking marathon is set to push her to the limits and achieve this impressive feat.”
Why’s she doing this?
Speaking at a media briefing before the attempt, Hilda Baci said “I feel like doing this is pretty much setting a precedent for a generation that is coming after me. I’m putting myself forward to be one of those examples to let other women know that there’s so much more you can do.”
What does she get for setting a new record?
After successfully setting the new record, she will receive an official Guinness World Records certificate.
Accolades and Support from Nigerians
As the outstanding feat of the 27-year-old is receiving commendations and applauds from Nigerians, on Sunday, May 14, 2023, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos visited the venue of the cook-a-thon, while Vice President Yemi Osinbajo also called to motivate her.
The venue of the cooking marathon in Lekki, Lagos, has been turned to a concert of sorts as many Nigerians and music stars have gathered there to cheer her on and motivate her.
Other prominent Nigerians who have visited the venue include Tiwa Savage, Charles Okocha, Skibii, Dremo, Segun Johnson, Chidi Mokeme, Nancy Isime, among others.
The current record holder, Chef Lata Tondon, also sent her best wishes to Hilda on Sunday night.
“All the best Hilda. Hope to see you on the official site of Guinness Book of World Record soon!” she wrote on Instagram in the late hours of Sunday.
