Over the past year, Nigerian songs have had incredible feats on International charts, with Rema’s Calm Down featuring Selena Gomez currently hitting a new peak of No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
With these accolades and the Nigerian sound to the world movement going extremely well, Hollywood films have employed the expertise of top stars in Nigeria for their Afrocentric movie soundtracks. From Beyoncé’s Lion King album, which featured a dichotomy of African music stars, to Wizkid featuring on Spiderverse’s soundtrack, the Nigerian sound has really reached all parts of the world.
Here are five Hollywood Soundtracks from Nigerian artistes.
Coming Back For You by Fireboy DML
The song, which was released in November 2022 alongside Burna Boy’s Alone, Tems’ refix of Bob Marley’s No Woman No Cry, Rema’s Pantera, and many more on the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever album, was one sentimental song that had everyone introspective with its lyrics.
Coming Back For You was produced by P.Priime and Ludwig Goransson.
My Money, My Baby by Burna Boy
The pride that rose in Nigerian’s hearts when Burna Boy sampled Fela Kuti’s 1972 song ‘Zombie’ for the Queen and Slim soundtrack ‘My Money, My Baby,’ was unrivalled. Burna Boy employed Fela’s talk style of singing and mannerism for this single, and it was unarguably one of the stand-out tracks from the album.
The soundtrack was produced by Benn Good.
Brown Skin Girl by Beyonce ft Wizkid
When Brown Skin Girl was released it was the ultimate black girl anthem. The Grammy-winning song featuring Blue Ivy and Saint JHN was unarguably one of the best songs of the album.
The song produced by P2J and Beyonce was off Beyonce’s The Lion King: The Gift album, which was for the 2019 Lion King film.
Lift Me Up by Rihanna ft Tems
Years after Rihanna’s absence from the music industry, she chose to work with Grammy-winning star Tems on her first comeback. Lift Me Up, a song for the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever film paid tribute to Chadwick Boseman, who had passed away from Colon Cancer in 2020.
In a space of months, the single bagged nominations at the Oscars for Best Soundtrack, making Tems the first Nigerian artiste to be nominated at the Oscars.
Koroba by Tiwa Savage
When Tiwa Savage released Koroba in 2020, It was a part of her third studio album ‘Celia’, soon it was added as a soundtrack to the Coming 2 America album.
The single produced by London and Mystro was added alongside Davido’s Assurance and Tekno’s Waka Waka.
