Substance abuse is a difficult and very personal problem that affects millions of people worldwide. Addiction, whether to alcohol, illegal substances, or prescription pharmaceuticals, may swiftly spiral out of control, affecting physical health, relationships, and general well-being. The road to rehabilitation, however, is not insurmountable. Individuals can take critical steps toward breaking free from the clutches of substance misuse and enjoying a fulfilling, sober life provided they have the correct mindset, tools, and self-help tactics.

According to a report published by the National Bureau of Statistics, around 40 per cent among those reported that they had wanted to receive drug treatment but were unable to access such services. The cost of treatment, stigma associated with accessing such services as well as stigma associated with substance use in general, and availability of adequate drug treatment services were the major barriers in accessing drug treatment in Nigeria.

According to a report published by the United Nations, 35 million people worldwide suffer from drug use disorders while only 1 in 7 people receive treatment.

We would be diving into five self-help tips that experts recommend for quitting substance abuse;

Establish Boundaries

Set up clear boundaries with people or situations that could encourage or precipitate substance usage. Avoid situations that can jeopardise your rehabilitation, and surround yourself with sympathetic and understanding people who accept your desire to stop smoking.

Create a healthy routine

Setting up a regular daily schedule helps provide your recovery journey consistency and direction. Include time-filling activities that will keep your mind off of negative pursuits, such as exercise, meditation, hobbies, and healthy social contacts.

Establish definite, attainable goals

Decide why you want to stop abusing drugs or alcohol, and then make attainable goals. Make sure that your objectives are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound. Having specific objectives will help you stay motivated and give you a sense of direction as you work toward recovery.

Affiliate yourself with a recovery group

Join a community that will be helpful to you during your rehabilitation, such as a peer network or a support group. You can significantly improve your chances of staying sober by surrounding yourself with people who are sympathetic to your situation and who can provide support and accountability.

Identifying and avoiding triggers

Determine the circumstances, persons, or surroundings that lead to cravings or temptations. Avoiding these triggers will greatly improve your chances of success, especially early on in your recovery. It can entail altering your social circle, avoiding specific locations, or developing alternate strategies for dealing with circumstances that could trigger relapse.

Just keep in mind that everyone’s journey is different and that rehabilitation is a lengthy process.People can overcome substance misuse and start a new chapter in their lives that is full of hope, healing, and a better future if they are determined, resilient, and given the correct support.
