Every year, the MTN-MUSON graduation ceremony always begins with a musical concert, where the graduating set delights the audience with musical performances of a perfect blend of foreign and local songs. This year, the 2023 graduating students thrilled the audience with sounds from classical composers like Alexander Goedicke as well as contemporary musicians like Lagbaja and even folk songs.
Below are some of our favourite performances from the concert in no order;
I hate men by Cole Por
The classic 1949 song I Hate Men which ironically was written by a man, was beautifully performed by Flora Fasan. She did not just perform the song, she embodied the song and ensured to reiterate her dislike for men with her powerful voice. One would be tempted to believe that, she truly hates men.
Monkey Dance by Tones & I
The Monkey Dance was one of the most popular hit songs of 2019, and you will think you have heard all the best versions of the song until you hear Olaitan Israel’s Marimba version. Olaitan played the song on the Marimba beautifully, and the audience literally went agog. Everyone was on their feet dancing, cheering and singing along. It sure was an amazing performance.
Iya Ni Wura By Arr. Moyosore Adebanjo
If you have lived in the southwest for a long time, you will be familiar with the popular Mother’s Day song Iya ni Wura. Moyosore Adebanjo arranged and rendered a beautiful performance of the song with the Violin. The addition of a mother figure during his performance added colour to his rendition of the folk song.
Never far away by Lagbaja
The evergreen song by Lagbaja featuring Ego Ihenacho always gets people in their feelings, and Abisola Edun did not only render a beautiful performance of the song, but she also had the audience in their feelings and made the audience sing along.
Ole Olojukokoro by Seun Owoaje
The song Ole Ojukokoro which translates to a thief and greedy person is a warning to desist from such acts. The strong baritone performance of the song by Samuel Taiwo could probably make a thief repent. One could hear the resounding warning in his rendition of the song.
The MTN Foundation in partnership with the Musical Society of Nigeria (MUSON) runs a two-year Diploma in music programme that creates an opportunity for young music enthusiasts to become well-rounded, thoroughly educated musicians. Since the launch of the program in 2006, over 400 musical talents have been trained through the programme.
