Love or hate Daniel Andrews, you've got to have a laugh at the retiring Victorian premier's post on his personal Facebook page as new premier Jacinta Allan settles into the state's top job.

Andrews started with a fairly standard message, thanking all the right people and basically just saying goodbye.

But it's the follow-up comment and image that he posted underneath his original post that changed the tone from dreary to droll.

Andrews posted an image of himself in Tiananmen Square, in China's capital Beijing, with a phone to his ear and the caption: "Hand over the password".

The line is a reference to a long-lasting internet meme dating back to a 2016 photo taken in just the third year of Andrews' reign as premier, which lasted almost a decade from December 2014 to September 2023.

Here's the image Andrews posted this Friday.

And here's the image from 2016, proving that running the state of Victoria is enough to turn anyone's hair a little grey.

The meme with the original image of the phone to Andrews' ear in Tiananmen Square soon became a hit on social media.

Anytime just about anything happened in Victoria - from serious news to lighter stories – it would inevitably be just minutes before someone posted the pic with words suggesting Andrews had deliberately orchestrated some sort of malfeasance.

The ex-premier is nothing if not self-aware, and in his post today, he was clearly laughing at himself while also sharing the joke with his detractors.

Andrews is perhaps the most divisive politician this country has ever produced, and if you happen to fancy running into him in coming months, or if you'd rather not get within 100km of him, his Facebook page contains a strong clue as to where he'll be.

It's right there in his bio, which contains just two words: keen golfer.
