Barely four months after the severe land erosion at Bortianor-Ngleshie Amanfro in the Ga South Municipality was highlighted by JoyNews, a new form of land erosion is rapidly developing in some communities along the Weija lake in the same municipality.

These communities are  American Farm, Toptown, Ateaa and Peace town.

Residents say their communities are currently under the threat of  severe soil erosion and any failure to tackle it will result in possible devastating consequences.

The environmental degradation which is blamed on more frequent and intense rainfall experienced this year, is also attributed to climate change coupled with lack of proper drainage system to mitigate the impact.

The situation seems alarming as almost every waterway close to homes have developed dangerous holes making it difficult for residents to enter their homes when it is raining .

However, stronger and faster stream velocity aptly described by a resident  creates deep holes on their compounds spreading under their houses and sometimes collapse their fence walls.

In an interview with Myjoyonline, the Headmaster of the Oriens School Complex, Mr Maclean Mensah, said the situation has affected children’s education in the area.

“When it rains heavily, parents have no option but to keep their children at home to prevent them from foreseeable eventualities.”

Mr Maclean lamented that his persistent calls on the Ga South Municipal Assembly to expedite action on the situation has proved futile.

He said his school is trying to spearhead a community environmental action plan with residents and landlords to see what they can do as a measure to bring the situation under control.

One of the affected  landlords, Mr Freeman Kpodo said the problem is common in the community but has become serious than it was.

According to him, he has complained to the Assembly Member of the area, Mr Pursues Amadum Kwashie but nothing has been done about the situation.

Mr Kpodo said the running water has created a deep hole in front of his house which is fast destroying his compound.

He added that anytime it rains especially in the night, he and his family wakes up to fill sacks with sand to block the water from entering their home.

He described the situation as very disturbing

He is therefore calling on the government to come to their aid before disaster strikes.

Madam Elekem Abavon, a fruit seller said a school girl was nearly carried away by running water while returning from school.

She said the situation has become too dangerous, hence the need for parents not to allow their children to move alone.
