Earlier this afternoon police had said he was in an "extremely critical" condition.

No one has yet been arrested over the attack.

Police have revealed "detectives have identified a black BMW sedan as being in James Street shortly after 12.20am".

"The BMW crashed on Seaview Road at Tennyson and five suspects ran from the area," a statement from police reads.

"The suspects then allegedly stole a Mazda from West Lakes, this vehicle was recovered at Davoren Park on December 11."

Earlier Detective Superintendent Des Bray earlier said it was believed the 61-year-old's home was targeted by a group seen trying to steal cars in the area before the attack.

Michael Yung, a leading Paediatrician at the Women's and Children's Hospital, was allegedly attacked by intruders in his home on James Street in Gilberton about 4.20am.

Bray alleged the group was seen testing doors on homes in the street and trying to steal cars.

He said detectives had been investigating a series of crimes over the past few days, that involved up to 15 reports of people attempting to break in or steal cars, but were now focusing on the attack on Yung.

The crimes allegedly occurred at Gilberton, Walkerville, Medindie, Henley Beach and other surrounding suburbs.

"All the resources of major crime are devoted to this crime," Bray said this afternoon.

"I'm very happy with the progress of the investigation to date and we're pursuing a number of positive lines of inquiry.

"I hope that we can get an outcome for the family in this matter but that doesn't take away the terrible suffering that the family are experiencing at the moment and the injuries to Michael."

He said most of the likely offenders were known to police.

Police are yet to lay any charges.

"It's a very fluid group, people come into the group, people come out, people do things on their own.

"But we're looking at those people, their friends and their associates."

SA Police Minister Joe Szakacs said Yuan was respected and "much loved" for the work he did.

"This is a horrible, horrible set of circumstances and I'm heartened to see the outpouring of support that has been offered at this really troubling and difficult time."

Szakacs said the community was not at risk.
