Thousands evacuated after fire breaks out in Sydney Westfield

Thousands of Christmas shoppers have been evacuated following a fire at a Westfield shopping centre in Western Sydney. 

Smoke quickly filled the eastern side of the shopping centre after a wok caught alight at Noodle Time in the food court of Penrith Westfield just after 1pm today.

Fire Rescue New South Wales (FRNSW) said it took eight fire trucks and 28 firefighters over half an hour to extinguish the blaze.

Firefighters said 2000 to 3000 people were evacuated during the incident.

Paramedics treated a kitchen hand at the scene for smoke inhalation but they didn't need to go to hospital.

Businesses were hit by the lack of shoppers for up to two hours just a week from December 25.
