A 16-year-old girl is dead and her 10-year-old sister is in a critical condition after a horror crash for one Gold Coast family.

A mother and her two daughters were on their way to Melbourne from Queensland for Taylor Swift's concert when their SUV was involved in a head-on collision near Dubbo in the New South Wales central west.

The 16-year-old girl was in the front passenger seat and she died at the scene.

Police are investigating the circumstances of the crash.

Her younger sister was flown to Westmead Hospital in Sydney in a critical condition.

It is understood she remains in hospital tonight in an induced coma with serious brain injuries.

Their mother was treated by paramedics at the scene and taken to Dubbo Hospital with minor injuries.

The driver of the semi-trailer was taken to Dubbo Hospital in a stable condition.

Police are investigating the circumstances of the crash and a report will be prepared for the coroner.

Family and friends have set up an online fundraiser to help the Queensland family with costs, such as accommodation in Sydney.
