Alberta Health Services is warning the public that an individual with lab-confirmed measles has been in public settings in Edmonton while infectious.
In a Wednesday news release, officials sent out a list of locations and times of when the infected person was out in public and said residents who were at any of the locations during the specified dates and times may have been exposed to measles:
April 16
- Exposure location: Edmonton International Airport, international arrivals and baggage claim area
- Exposure time period: 3:20 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. MST.

“Anyone who attended these locations at these times who was born in or after 1970 and has less than two documented doses of measles-containing vaccine, is at risk for developing measles,” AHS said in the release. “Exposed people born in or after 1970 who have received fewer than two doses of measles-containing vaccine, who are pregnant, under one year of age, or have a weakened immune system are at greatest risk.”
Those who may have been exposed are “strongly encouraged” to review their immunization records and monitor themselves for symptoms of measles and are asked to stay home. AHS said those who have been exposed should contact Health Link at 1-877-720-0707.
Symptoms include fever of 38.3 C or higher, cough, runny nose and or red eyes, a red blotchy rash that appears three to seven days after a fever starts — beginning behind the ears and on the face, spreading down the body and them to the arms and legs.
Measles is extremely contagious and is spread through the air — there is currently no treatment for measles, however it can be prevented through immunization. The province offers the vaccine free of charge through their immunization program.
Albertans who are uncertain of their vaccine history are asked to text ‘vaccine record’ to 88111 or call Health Link at 811.
