A Red Deer oilfield equipment company is sentenced to pay $360,000 after a crane operator was fatality crushed by heavy equipment at a worksite January 2022.
On Jan 13. 2022, a worker at an Isolation Equipment Services Inc. construction site was operating an overhead crane carrying a valve bonnet when the bonnet detached from the rigging, landing on and pinning the worker, the province said in a Monday news release. The worker sustained fatal injuries.
Isolation Equipment Services Inc. plead guilty to one charge under the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Code for failing to take measures to eliminate the potential danger of equipment or material that was dislodged or moved. The Crown withdrew 28 other charges under OHS legislation.
The company was sentenced on Wednesday to pay $360,000 in penalties, including a creative sentencing demand to pay $359,000 to Energy Safety Canada to develop competency programs for supervisors who work with new, young and inexperienced workers.
Through creative sentencing, OHS has the option to redirect fine payments to an organization or project that improves or promotes workplace health and safety.
