"I went to have a shower and look through my bedroom window and saw smoke and the flames out the roof and flames coming out," neighbour Pamela Jenkins told 9News.

"I just ran around to see if everything was alright."

Another neighbour called triple zero just before 8.30am.

Wall's partner Simone had smashed her way out and was found bleeding, her lungs full of smoke.

"Those lacerations we believe were the woman escaping through a front window," Wayne Ernest Trezise from Metropolitan Fire Service said.

The 46-year-old was taken to Flinders Medical Centre with life-threatening injuries.

Too heartbroken to speak on camera, friends described the couple as inseparable and eager to help out wherever they could.

A number of pets also succumbed to the fire.

While the extent of the damage to the house isn't immediately obvious outside, it's been largely gutted. The damage bill is estimated at $200,000.

Police detectives and forensic specialists are investigating the circumstances of the fire and it will form part of a report to the Coroner.
