A Preston boxer on the run from police is wanted in connection with a city centre assault, Blog Preston understands.

Police issued an appeal on Friday (19 July) stating that Fitzgerald, who they described as 5’9″, stocky, with short, dark brown, wavy hair, was wanted for wounding with intent.

They warned the public not to approach him but instead to call 999.

The warning relates to an incident on Guildhall Street, Preston, at around 2.50am in the aftermath of England’s defeat to Spain in Euro 2024. The city centre had been especially busy as a result.

A man in his 30s suffered a cut to the head and went to hospital for treatment.

Fitzgerald has seemingly taken exception to the wording of the police guidance.

He appeared to reply stating: “Lying again! I’ll meet you now with a tape measure and prove I’m 5 foot 11.

“Do not approach him he might hug you, kiss you in your ear lobe and tell you he loves you!”

A further post on his own Facebook page said: “I SAID THEY CANT CATCH ME IM THE GINGERBREAD MAN.”

The former super-welter weight champion was found not guilty of rape in February after a trial at Preston Crown Court.

Last month he announced his intention to return to the ring in the coming months.
