The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, convened a meeting with ministers on Wednesday to discuss the proposed nationwide protest against the economic hardships faced by Nigerian youths.
Naija News reports that this meeting took place in a confidential setting, with the participation of ministers in the President’s cabinet.
Among the ministers present were Nyesom Wike (Federal Capital Territory), Yusuf Tuggar (Foreign Affairs), Zephaniah Jisalo (Special Duties), Tahir Mamman (Education), and Abubakar Bagudu (Budget and Planning).
Additionally, the meeting was attended by Wale Edun (Finance), Mohammed Idris (Information), Bello Matawalle (Defence), David Umahi (Works), and the National Security Adviser (NSA) Nuhu Ribadu, among others.
The meeting was still in progress at the time this report was filed.
Recall that on Tuesday, President Bola Tinubu issued a call to Nigerians to postpone the upcoming ‘EndBadGovernance’ protest, which was initially scheduled for next month.
This protest, which is gaining momentum on social media, is set to take place across all states of the Federation, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, in August.
The organizers of the protest remain unidentified.
The escalating prices of food and basic commodities over the past months reflect the severe economic hardship faced by Nigerians, exacerbated by the country’s worst inflation and economic crisis, which has been triggered by the government’s dual policies of abolishing petrol subsidies and the unification of forex windows.
