Med 3 Tapas in Bamber Bridge
toonsbymoonlight

After failing to surprise my friend, gluten free Jess by finding something a little different to do for her birthday, we decided to combine her love of pub quizzes (fun fact, she was once on Eggheads) with a Tuesday Tapas Tea at Bamber Bridge’s Med3. The chip butty during the pub quiz break wouldn’t have cut it.

Just like the good old Newman days, Jess’s dad gave us a lift and upon arrival for our 6pm booking there were only another couple of tables taken. However, it didn’t take long for more diners to arrive and fill the small venue, which was surprising for a Tuesday night.

Perhaps it was the three tapas for £14.95 deal bringing in the custom. We were surrounded by wood and felt like we were either in a sauna without the steam or a cabin in the woods without the serial killer. I did like the wood, despite how it seems and there was a relaxed ambience about the place.

Sitting down, I spotted the cocktail menu and chose a strawberry mojito (£6.95), and Jess went for a Med 3 Kiss (£7.95)/ Swit swoo. Jess had already checked out the menu online, so a million questions were not needed as ‘GF’ was displayed on the relevant dishes across the menu.

Everything arrived quite quickly and before we knew it, the table was full of Tapas. Jess cheekily asked for an extra gluten free wrap for the greek pork souvlaki (£7.95) to be told it wasn’t gluten free as while it did have GF against it on the menu, we were told it means GF option (if the wrap is removed), which wasn’t very clear.

However, the menu also asks that you mention any allergies or intolerances, which we didn’t do. Luckily, Jess is gluten intolerant rather than allergic so for anyone with intolerances or allergies out there, be sure to check before ordering.

After the GF confusion, we ordered another pork souvlaki without the wrap. Our patatas bravas aioli (£4.95) arrived as patatas aioli missing the tomato sauce, but we only noticed after scoffing half the food. A shame it was missing, as the aioli featured in quite a few of the dishes. Jess is currently in a halloumi fries (£6.95) phase and if black pudding is on the menu in any way, it’s mine, so in came the black pudding spring rolls (£6.50) which sadly we couldn’t share as they weren’t GF. All mine.

The halloumi was perfect, but I would’ve preferred a sweeter sauce for the spring rolls rather than the aioli, so I used the sauce from the halloumi. They did, however, satisfy my black pudding needs. The salt and pepper chicken wings (£6.95) were missing something but were tasty nonetheless and the chicken stroganoff (£7.95) was one of our favourites of the night with a mouthwatering, creamy, rich sauce.

To make the meal healthier, I ordered a Greek salad (£5.95), to which Jess pointed out that to be healthier, I’d need to eat said salad, which was still sat there untouched whilst we devoured the other dishes. I didn’t really need to order it as you get a side salad with most dishes, but the added bonus of feta was worth it.

Jess’s first cocktail surprised me, she usually goes for purple drinks like Wall Street’s Purple People Eater, but no fear, a Blue Lagoon (£5.95) was her next choice, and I ordered a Whitley Neil Blood Orange Gin (£4.90) though with the mixer (£1.75), I probably should’ve got one of the other reasonably priced cocktails.

Both Jess and I really enjoyed the Tapas Feast though Jess mentioned she would’ve preferred a bit more variety as there were quite a few GF chicken dishes including three flavours of chicken wings.

Time for dessert and the only option for GF Jess was the Creme Brûlée (£6.95) but she was more than happy with it, I tried it too and it was a dream. I went for the Affogato which also came with a shot of Amaretto. Wahey.

I was however, a little bemused by the shape of the ice cream dish which would not allow me to drown my ice cream in coffee and amaretto without it pouring out of the side, but the combination of strong, bitter, and sweet flavours was exactly what I needed, and I made the right dessert choice. I often don’t, so yay for me.

The service had been spot on, attentive and friendly and I wouldn’t hesitate to go there again to try some different dishes. Our bill came to £76.25. Six of our dishes were in the three for £14.95 deal and the prices above are the amounts if you don’t have the deal. For the Tapas Feast with cocktails and desserts, Jess and I agreed that it was reasonably priced and a whole lot better than a chip butty at the pub quiz.
