A three-year-old boy has died after he fell out of a car in Perth yesterday afternoon.

The boy was in the back seat of a white Kia Carnival station wagon driving on Arthur Street in Dayton at 3.50pm when he fell onto the road near the intersection of Grandis Road.

9News understands the three-year-old's mother was driving the car when the boy opened a rear passenger door.

Police said the boy fell out and was then run over by the same car.

The boy was then taken to a house 400 metres down the road, believed to belong to his grandmother.

Emergency services were called, with paramedics working desperately to save the boy.

"Sadly, the passenger sustained critical injuries and died a short time later," WA police said in a statement.

Resident Sinikiwe Dumba said she heard sirens and saw police blocking the road.

"I just heard a woman scream out in agony and I knew something was wrong," she said.

Dumba said it was sad a young child was involved in such a horrific accident.

"I feel sorry for the parents. I can only imagine what they're going through," she said.

Western Australia Premier Roger Cook stressed children should always be restrained while in a car.

"I think anyone regardless of their age, but in particular toddlers need to be restrained in a car with a seatbelt and with an accredited child restraint," he said.

Major Crash investigators are scouring the scene.

They are also seeking anyone who may have dashcam or mobile phone footage of the crash.

Any witnesses are asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or report the information online at www.crimestopperswa.com.au.
