A constestant at the Miss South Africa pageant, Chidimma Adetshina, has announced her exit from the competitition after a backlash from South Africans over her heritage.

The contestant with Nigerian heritage made this announcement on Thursday through her Instagram page.

“After much careful consideration, I have made the difficult decision to withdraw myself from the competition for the safety and wellbeing of my family and I,” she wrote on Instagram.

Adetchina thanked her fans and well wishers for their support through the competition.

Her withdrawal comes after her Nigerian heritage was called into question after booking a final place in the competition

The Law student has been under fire since, coming under a wave of xenophic attacks and cyberbullying by those who feel she is not “South African enough.”

Adetshina had disclosed that she was born in Soweto to a Nigerian father and a South African mother of Mozambican descent.

The Home Affairs ministry has, however, accused her mother of fraud and identity theft.

It has been revealed that organizers of the pageant called for an inquest into her citizenship.

Early findings point towards the contestant’s mother allegedly committing fraud and stealing the identity of a South African woman.

This, the Ministry insist, could have an impact on the citizenship of Adetshina.
