The Senator representing Delta North in the National Assembly, Ned Nwoko, has defended his wife cum Nollywood actress, Regina Daniels, following the backlash that marred her remarks on the #EndBadGovernance protest.
Naija News recalls that during the nationwide protest, which began on August 1, some Nigerians took to the streets to decry poor governance and the soaring cost of living in the country.
In response, President Bola Tinubu, in a nationwide broadcast on Sunday, August 4, urged protesters to end their actions in favour of dialogue.
Amidst the demonstrations, Regina, in a series of posts shared on her Instagram page, condemned the acts of violence by some protesters and hoodlums.
However, her remarks led to intense criticism on social media, with many users accusing her of speaking from a “privileged position” and being out of touch with the struggles of ordinary Nigerians.
Responding to critics, Daniels acknowledged her privilege but argued that it does not diminish her concern for the economic challenges bedevilling Nigeria.
According to the movie star, despite her privileged position, she is affected by the country’s challenges, adding that her domestic staff and those around her also bear the brunt of the rising costs.
In a post on his Instagram page, Ned Nwoko praised Regina for her wisdom and strength in standing with Nigerians at a critical time.
The Nigerian billionaire added that his legislative efforts have always focused on the welfare of the people.
He said, “I commend Gina’s wisdom and strength of character in deciding on her own to sympathize and support Nigerians who are showing bottled up frustrations with the apparent hopelessness in the country. I must add that the current economic and insecurity problems in Nigeria are as a result of decades of bad governance.
“Please let everyone be peaceful with the protests as there cannot be any justifications for more loss of lives. I have also decided that in the next few days, I will speak and write on a few realistic immediate solutions especially on economic and insecurity problems facing our nation .As a senator, my bills and motions have been about the people. This is really my passion.”
