House builder, Story Homes, hosted workshops for Longton Primary School students to teach them building site safety.
The primary school is located near Story Homes’ Longton Grange development. Four classes of students and teachers visited the site to learn about the different jobs involved in building houses and the importance of staying safe on site.
The Site Manager and Assistant Site Mangers at Longton Grange gave the students a tour of the housing development, discussing the hazards to look out for on a building site and helping them understand why staying away from live construction is the best way to stay safe.

Roger Lang, Customer Aftercare Technical Inspector for Story Homes, said: “As a family-owned, responsible house builder, we know the importance of making children aware of site safety. We have a responsibility to the communities in which we build to not only enhance the area but also to minimise any disruption caused by our work – and this includes ensuring our neighbours are kept safe.
“We thoroughly enjoyed working with the students from Reception through to Year 6, and hopefully when they are older, they may consider a role with a housing developer such as Story Homes. We want to thank Longton Grange Primary School for allowing us to run the workshops and we hope to see them again soon.”
After watching a demonstration of the types of personal protective equipment (PPE) that workers are required to wear, the children had the opportunity to dress up in their own PPE, including a hard hat and high-visibility vest. Each student was given a reflective high-visibility school bag which included a safety workbook and crayons. Story Homes’ friendly mascot, Builder Bear, also made a surprise appearance during the visits.
Julie Brown, Head Teacher at Longton Primary School, said: “The children were all so excited to visit the Story Homes site and have Roger come into our school to deliver a lesson. Meeting Builder Bear was a lovely additional surprise for them.”
She continued: “They were engaged and interested in the sessions and took away valuable lessons about how to stay safe by not playing on building sites. Thank you to the Story Homes staff for taking the time to host our children.”
