A 50-year-old man is fighting for life in hospital after being hurt in a hit and run just meters from home.

Police are hunting for the driver who allegedly fled the scene, leaving his victim with life-threatening injuries.

The man was hit at 7.50pm last night while crossing Hawker Street in Bowden, 2.5km from Adelaide's CBD.

Witness Ian Dixon told 9News Adelaide he initially thought the man had died.

"Unfortunately, it looked like there was a body on the road there wrapped in a sheet," he said.

Police are now trawling traffic cameras around the area to try and find the driver.

Images of two cars captured on security cameras before the collision were released to the public, but have been identified and eliminated from the investigation.

Residents say the man had just got off a bus and was crossing the street to go home when he was hit.

Locals told 9News they believe the road is a "problem area".

"There is a lot happening over 200 metres of street – between the train crossings and street entries," one said.
