Radio legend Tony Blackburn has been filling the airwaves at Royal Preston Hospital during Tuesday afternoon.

Preston Hospital Radio had two Radio 2 special guests join their schedule as Richie Anderson earlier presented their breakfast show.

Patients and staff at the hospital were able to requests songs and make dedications during the shows.

Tony Blackburn OBE said: “I feel incredibly lucky to be able to do what I do and I know how important hospital radio is to the patients and their families, so it was my absolute pleasure to present a show on Royal Preston Hospital Radio.

“It was an honour to read out their messages and play the songs that will brighten their day ahead of Radio 2 in the Park this weekend.”

Lancashire Teaching Hospitals head of recruitment and volunteers, Stefanie Johnson, had joined the presenters on air and also chatted with Scott Mills during the Breakfast Show.

She said: “What a day to remember. The day Radio 2 came to Preston Hospital Radio and received a right Preston welcome from me and our team of volunteer presenters.

“Thanks to Tony Blackburn, Richie Anderson and everyone from the BBC Radio 2 shows we’ve loved having you.”

Chief executive of Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Silas Nicholls, said: “The Hospital Radio volunteers at Royal Preston Hospital provide a fantastic service, lifting the spirits of patients, families and staff, and it was great to host Richie Anderson and the legendary Tony Blackburn.

“To have them step in and assist with our shows was a fantastic surprise for all, ahead of what is set to be an exciting weekend for BBC Radio 2 in Preston.”
